One of my favourite stories that I remember from childhood is Chicken Licken.
“The sky is falling, the sky is falling!” clucks Chicken Licken, when in fact it was just an acorn falling on her head. After whipping up hysteria amongst her friends, they all run around spreading doom and gloom and seek the king for guidance. Whilst in their panic, they are tricked and eaten by Foxy Loxy.
How we react to a situation has an impact on the outcome. So if acorns are falling on your head, ask yourself….
- What’s really going on?
- Is my own ‘stuff’ and other people’s ‘stuff’ affecting my perception of what’s really going on?
- Can we ever truly know what’s really going on, in its entirety?
- Do I need to act?
- What is the best way for me to respond to get the best outcome?
A CEO I worked with has a copy of Chicken Licken in pride of place in his office.
What do you do to remind yourself to keep a cool head?
